Deadline for Applications: 15 April 2013. The fourth EADV/ESDR Summer Research Workshop on “Mouse models in skin research” is scheduled to take place Monday 22 July – Friday 26 July 2013 in Cologne, Germany. This is an exciting joint venture between the ESDR and EADV to support research and education across European dermatology.

The course is primarily aimed at dermatological residents/trainees who have an interest in research but who have not yet undertaken a substantial block of research. This years’ course has an emphasis on mouse models, molecular biology and cloning but covers many general laboratory techniques.  The programme has been designed to offer real “hands-on” experience of techniques complemented by seminars explaining the theoretical basis about specific techniques, as well as state of the art lectures.  The course also includes either a journal club or research presentations held by the participants.

The course is free of charge and includes educational material, certificate of attendance, free accommodation, catering and a social event (dinner).

In applying, you are asked to write a paragraph indicating why you wish to attend, provide a short CV, a letter of recommendation written by the chair of department and a title for a research or journal club presentation.  As the number of places is limited to 25, participants will be selected primarily on the basis of their application but we will also aim to provide a balanced distribution across different regions.

The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 April 2013 and we aim to let you know as soon as possible whether your application has been successful.

JOINING THE ESDR

By joining the ESDR you help support the administration of the society, the organisation of annual scientific meetings and educational programs. Your membership also contributes to the provision of funding for travel grants and intersociety collegiality awards.

Requirements for Joining ESDR

Applications are taken throughout the year from individuals working in the dermatology area. Several membership categories are available from Student/Resident to Standard and Patron Memberships. Members of the JSID or SID can benefit from reduced annual meeting fees by joining the ESDR as "Joint Members".

Each membership application must be supported by two existing ESDR members. If you do not know other members, the membership committee of the ESDR will review and support your application if it is eligible.

The 2012 ESDR Academy for Future Leaders in Dermatology was held in Barcelona, Spain from 25-27 October 2012.

The 2012 Academy was generously supported through educational grants from Abbott, Abbott Germany and Celgene.

PROGRAM

The ESDR Academy for Future Leaders in Dermatology is an annual educational event that was launched in 2011. It brings together highly gifted young scientists and renowned senior scientists from dermatological departments all over Europe for a 2.5 day meeting. Applicants are invited to apply to join the Academy by 1 March of the year in which the Academy is held. Applications are reviewed on scientific merit by the ESDR Scientific Program Committee. ESDR committees are also responsible for inviting senior faculty.

All attendees give oral presentations and poster presentations of their work and there are lectures by senior scientists complementing these presentations.

The goal of this initiative is to encourage young gifted dermatologists to further pursue their academic careers through guidance and mentoring of established scientists in the field. Besides scientific sessions, there is a strong emphasis on encouraging young people to network and to exchange ideas.

ESDR is convinced that the Academy is a vital platform for developing European research networks and tomorrow's leaders in dermatology.

EADV/ESDR Summer Research Workshop

8-11 May 2013. International Investigative Dermatology 2013 (IID 2013) is the five-yearly scientific meeting of the European Society for Dermatological Research, Society for Investigative Dermatology and Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatology. The meeting will be held in Edinburgh, Scotland from 8-13 May 2013. A number of pre- and post-satellite meetings have been arranged. We expect 2000 delegates in Edinburgh and the meeting will combine prestigious guest lectures, plenary and concurrent sessions, sponsored symposia, poster presentations, a rich educational program and more. On the social side, in addition to a welcome reception and social event, we have also arranged an international collegiality event for younger researchers. Note that none of the organising societies will hold their annual meetings in 2013 - the next ESDR-only meeting will take place in September 2014.

1. Opening (Vincent Piguet)

Vincent Piguet welcomed ESDR members to the AGM.

2. Approval of the Minutes of the AGM in Helsinki 2010 (Vincent Piguet)

The AGM approved the minutes of the last AGM.

3. President’s Report (Vincent Piguet)

Vincent Piguet presented the members of the ESDR Board and active committees in 2011. Departing Board Members Eugene Healy, Antonio Costanzo and Philippe Musette were thanked for their contributions to the Board.

Vincent Piguet then showed that the number of society members continues to increase (currently 1098). He then informed the members that ESDR received 686 abstract submissions for the annual meeting and had attracted 1050 participants.

Vincent Piguet also reminded the members of the ESDR’s forthcoming annual meetings in 2012 and 2013. He concluded by informing members of two educational programs run by the ESDR – the Summer Research Workshop in conjunction with EADV and the ESDR Academy for Future Leaders in Dermatology.

4. Secretary-Treasurer’s Report (Alexander Enk)

Alexander Enk detailed the ESDR finances for the last financial year indicating that the Society had realized a positive result of approximately EUR 61,000.

The AGM approved the financial report.

Alexander Enk also described the ESDR office activities to the AGM.

5. New ESDR Members (Alexander Enk)

Vincent Piguet presented membership data. As of 9 September 2011, there are currently 1098 active ESDR members, which include 248 new members since the last AGM.

The AGM approved the new members.

6. Election of New Board Members  (Vincent Piguet)

Vincent Piguet asked the AGM to accept the nominations of the following members to the ESDR Board.

7. ESDR Executive (Vincent Piguet)

Vincent Piguet informed the members that Tilo Biedermann takes the ESDR Board presidency after the annual meeting and that Alexander Enk becomes President-Elect. Alexander Enk thanked Vincent Piguet for his excellent contribution as President.

8. JID Editor’s Report (Paul Bergstresser)

Paul Bergstresser announced the following to the AGM:

• Barbara Gilchrest will be the next Editor of the JID
• Impact factor rose to 6.27
• Year of the Mentor (2011)
• 75th Anniversary (2012)
• 36 Invited Reviews
• 2012 Volume will feature images from seminal JID  articles from past 25 years
